{"id":40,"date":"2014-03-19T12:34:06","date_gmt":"2014-03-19T02:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/?page_id=40"},"modified":"2018-05-31T21:21:38","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T11:51:38","slug":"guy-manning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/about-upf\/guy-manning\/","title":{"rendered":"Guy Manning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/D403121-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Guy Manning\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/D403121-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/D403121-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unitedprogressivefraternity.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/D403121-120x80.jpg 120w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/199;\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Guy Manning &#8211; Keyboards, Guitars, Mandolins and Backing vocals<\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">\u201cMusic is the great communicator and unlike modern technologies like e-mail, social network threads etc., it implicitly carries a great deal of emotion within its message\u2026you do not need emoticons here!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">When I was first talking to Mark about the formation of UPF, it was important to us both that as well as to entertain (ourselves and you too hopefully), that we tried to educate or at least spark debate on some of the things we feel passionately about.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">Ecological change and its consequence has formed a solid backbone of all my recorded output since 1999 starting with \u201cThe Last Psalm\u201d on the debut \u201cTall Stories for Small Children\u201d through \u201cDomicile\u201d [The Cure], \u201cRagged Curtains\u201d [The Ragged Curtain],\u201dOne Small Step\u2026 (Parts I-VIII) [One Small Step], \u201cDr Jonathan Anser\u201d [Anser\u2019s Tree] \u201cThe Southern Waves\u201d [Margaret\u2019s Children], \u201cAutumn Song\u201d [The Root, the Leaf &amp; the Bone]\u201d and more\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">Lyrics have always been extremely important to me and the whole package comprises of Music + Words + Artwork \u2013 With UPF we aim to provide excellence in all these areas.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">So let\u2019s get the word out there, start the talk and walk the walk\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Guy formed his first band when he was still at school, bringing\u00a0together members of the school orchestra and other more \u2018basic\u2019 musicians to play complex 20 minute epics! Sometime (much) later, Guy was the founding member of two Leeds (UK) based bands in the 1980s, \u201cLet\u2019s Eat!\u201d and \u201cBailey\u2019s Return\u201d. He was also recruited in 1987 to be the keyboards player in art-rock band \u201cThrough the Looking Glass\u201d. This band split up a year later and a more pop based offshoot, \u201cKingGlass\u201d, emerged and continued on for a further year (the other half of the original band got \u201cThrough the Loo\u201d for their name).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Manning and local keyboardist\/vocalist Andy Tillison joined forces in an early unsigned band called \u201cGold Frankincense &amp; Disk Drive\u201d. The band\u2019s final line-up included a guest spot from \u201cVan Der Graaf Generator\u201d organ player, Hugh Banton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Tillison and Manning recorded the album \u201cNo More Travelling Chess\u201d at this time, which consisted of a set of covers of material by Peter Hammill plus a couple of original pieces. This album was first released as a mail order cassette item (before an augmented and remastered version was eventually released by Cyclops Records in 2001 under the band name of \u201cParallel or 90 Degrees\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Tillison and Manning then formally formed the band, \u201cParallel or 90 Degrees\u201d with Sam Baine also on keyboards, but Guy was soon to leave to work abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Guy has gone on to write, record and release his own albums, the first five were on the Cyclops label and then three more, \u201cA Matter Of Life &amp; Death (The Journal of Abel Mann)\u201d, \u201cOne Small Step\u2026\u201d and \u201cAnser\u2019s Tree\u201d, for United States label, ProgRock Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">The ProgRock Records album covers were all created by noted graphic arts designer, Ed Unitsky. Manning\u2019s ninth release, \u201cSongs From The Bilston House\u201d (2007), was released on the Festival Music (F2) label as were the follow ups, the appropriately named \u201cNumber Ten\u201d (2009), \u201cCharlestown\u201d (2012) and 2011\u2019s \u201cMargaret\u2019s Children (which also featured a reprised\/updated Ed Unitsky cover).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Andy Tillison has guested on several of the earlier releases, whilst other guests have included Martin Orford (IQ), Ian \u2018Walter\u2019 Fairbairn (Hedgehog Pie &amp; Jack the Lad), Steve Dundon (Mick Abrahams Band &amp; Molly Bloom), Angela Gordon (Mostly Autumn), Marek Arnold (Toxic Smile &amp; Seven Steps to the Green Door), Leon Camfield (Tinyfish), Phideaux, Chloe Herrington (Knifeworld, Chrome Hoof) and John Young (Lifesigns, Asia)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">THE TANGENT<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Whilst all this was happening, plans for a solo album by Andy Tillison transformed into the first release by \u201cTHE TANGENT\u201d; the album was called \u201cThe Music That Died Alone\u201d (2003). This initial \u2018Tangent\u2019 line-up included Guy Manning, Sam Baine plus Roine Stolt, Jonas Reingold and Zoltan Csorsz (from The Flower Kings) and David Jackson (from Van der Graaf Generator). Other subsequent \u2018Tangent\u2019 members have included Theo Travis, Jaime Salazar, Krister Jonsson, Jakko M. Jakszyk, Jonathan Barrett, Paul Burgess, Dan Mash, Tony Latham, Luke Machin, the entire \u201cBeardfish\u201d band and Michael Gilbourne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Guy announced his formal departure from the \u201cThe Tangent\u201d in May 2010. In all, Guy played on five studio and one live album with The Tangent (although he reprised this with a cameo role for 2013\u2019s \u201cLe Sacre Du Travail\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">OTHER STUFF<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Manning and Tillison also had time to team up as fictional Italian band, \u201dLa Voce Del Vento\u201d, to provide two long pieces for the Colossus Project Discs (The Spaghetti Epics #1 and #2)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\"> Manning also provided an unreleased track for KINECTIONS, the US ProgDay festival support album.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\"> Manning\u2019s \u201cThe Root, the Leaf &amp; the Bone\u201d was released to critical acclaim in October 2013, appearing in some \u2018Top 10 album of the year\u2019 polls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">MANNING \u2013 THE BAND(s)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">In recent years, Guy has fronted his own band exclusively performing his music. The band has performed at ROSFEST in 2010, the Cambridge Rock Festival (twice), Summers\u2019 End Festival (twice). The Manning band performs in two varieties, ELEKTRIK (the full symphonic rock band) and AKOUSTIK (a cut down more simple and \u2018unplugged\u2019 version). The AKOUSTIK band performs material from the AKOUSTIK albums releases (2013). In Jan 2014, Guy announced that MANNING (the band) would retire to allow him to carry on working with other people and to concentrate on other project writing and solo albums in the pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">UNITED PROGRESSIVE FRATERNITY<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Guy was subsequently asked to join the new band fronted by Mark \u2018Truey\u2019 Trueack \u2013 the United Progressive Fraternity. He helped developed and record material for the debut album \u201cFall In Love With The World\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">DAMANEK<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">Following the UPF Promotional Tour in 2014, Guy settled down to write material for the next UPF album. Truey however was working in partnership with Steve Unruh at this time and had assembled an Australian based UPF band and the pieces presented for consideration at that time were felt to be not quite what was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">So, Guy decided to continue developing his new material for an new Project alongside his UPF friends Marek Arnold and Dan Mash (the UPF European arm!). Sean (Timms) was also asked to join the ensemble and the quartet, now named DAMANEK, started to record the eight pieces selected for the debut album \u201cOn Track\u201d. DAMANEK performed most the new material live at Summer&#8217;s End 2016 with the quartet augmented by Luke Machin on guitar and Henry Rogers on Drums. The band went down a storm!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dcdcdc;\">\u201cOn Track\u201d was finally released in May 2017 on the Giant Electric Pea label and has garnered fantastic reviews across the board (see www.damanek.com) for details.
